TURF is a 501(C)(3) charitable organization comprised of citizens of Marion, Mattapoisett and Rochester who want to make the Tri-Town Community Athletic Complex at ORRHS SAFER and more effective.
This is where the Tri-Town gathers. The fields are in deplorable condition; we can do better. The bottom line: At any time, perhaps even this week, a referee or official could walk onto the field or track and declare it "unsafe" and close it. At that point, the State would initiate an investigation regarding further measures.
We want to avoid all of that and for the past 3 years, we have been studying the usage, why the conditions are in their current state, and how we can develop an innovative solution to the problem.
We all choose to live in the Tri-Town for a reason: Quality of Life. Let's renew this area and have a space we can be proud of and better utilize!
Every day brings a diverse group of students and community members together to run the track, hop on the tennis courts, or join their teams on the playing fields. Each year thousands of friends, neighbors and teammates cross paths and strengthen connections. The fields at the high school have not been upgraded since the school's 2000 addition, and the facility is showing its age.
We've found that the fields are simply seeing too much use and the grass does not have a chance to recover. The ground has become compacted and most of the fields are not irrigated. The lighting, goal posts and lack of fencing in some areas are below current State standards. There are no bathrooms. There is no press box, so coaches and announcers have been forced to sit outside in the rain with electronic equipment.
This complex will bring our athletic programs to the next level, creating a SAFE environment for our youth and recreational programs, and expand opportunities for adult athletic and civic programs. This project also creates opportunities to generate significant revenue through the rental of the facilities.
Studies have shown that areas with modern recreational areas see a property value increase of 17% or more, and areas with poorly maintained rec areas see their property values decrease.
We can't do this without your help, no matter how big or small. Contact us to help or to just ask a question. We’re on Facebook, Twitter as @orrturf or email us: orrturf@gmail.com.
